Katharine Hepburn
Katharine Hepburn was an american actress. She ruled the Hollywood more than 60 years old. It’s not surprise, cause she could play any role — starting with drama and end up with a comedy.
Katharine was born at 12 of May in 1907 in big family. She was the second child of her parents and the eldest daughter. Her dad and mom were a free people and always fight for equality, so Katharine with her brothers and sisters could talk about anything. All her life she tried to be closer to her family.
However, in her childhood was an unhappy moments. When she was a 14 years old, she found her older brother Thomas dead. She loved him so much so this incident strongly influenced her so she became a very nervous and capricious. She even stopped her education. For a long time she celebrated her brother’s birthday (the 8 of November) as her own. Only in her book she uncovered her real birthdate.
In 1924 she attended a college, but it also was a hard time for her. Only acting saved her. She received positive reviews for her performances, so she decided to became an actress.
In 1928 she moved to the Baltimore to met Edwin Knopf (producer). His theatre was very successful, so that’s why she wanted work with him. Edwin was impressed of Katharine and she gaved her a little role in one of his play. This was the start of her career. Need to say, that critics took her play very good and she even appeared on the front pages of newspapers.
But the real breakthrough of her career was a role of Antiope in “Warrior husband”. Performance continued during 3 months. After this Hollywood agent Leland Hayward offered Katharine join a movie “A Bill of Divorcement”. The director of movie was impressed of young actress, so he immediately signed a contract with Hepburn. Since then, Katharine has appeared in films and plays almost every decade.
She became a lead actress of her epoch and break the barriers for women in american cinematography. In 1960 Hepburn awarded a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame. Katharine has been nominated for an Oscar for 12 times and won this award 4 times — more than any other actor or actress in history. Her image of strong and independent woman also attracted a lot of people. Many producers, directors and actors were her friends.
Katharine was an important cultural figure. Ros Horton and Sally Simmons included her in the list of women, who changed the world and helped to formulate worldwide culture history, not only because of her roles, but because of her lifestyle. In the USA she also known as a symbol of modern woman.
